What does “naipes” mean in Spanish?

Naipes means playing cards — specifically a deck made for games, not a stack of greeting cards (those are cartas). The word matters in Argentina because of truco, a very popular card game played with the 40-card Spanish deck. So naipes often points straight at game night, not paperwork.

Truco is famous for its bluffing and secret signals between teammates, and it is a big part of Argentine and Uruguayan culture.
