What is the difference between “zumo” and “jugo”?

Order juice in Madrid and it’s zumo; in Mexico City it’s jugo. Same drink, two ancient routes into Spanish: zumo arrived through Andalusi Arabic (ultimately from Greek zōmós, “broth”), while jugo descends from Latin sucus — the same root as English “succulent.” Both are correct Spanish; which one sounds natural depends entirely on which side of the Atlantic you’re on.

The clip’s Spaniard loves every form of tomato except one: “Solamente hay una cosa que no me gusta, y es el zumo. El zumo de tomate no me gusta.” A menu tip: in Spain zumo natural means fresh-squeezed, and jugo there usually refers to the juices of cooked meat — carne en su jugo.
