What does “salud” mean in Spanish?
Salud literally means “health,” and Spanish uses it for two moments English keeps separate. When someone sneezes, you say ¡Salud! — that is “bless you.” When you raise a glass, you also say ¡Salud! — that is “cheers.” Both come from the same idea: you are wishing the other person good health. The clip teaches it as “Bless you,” but the very same word works at the table with a drink.
At a toast you can lengthen it: ¡Salud! or ¡A tu salud! (“to your health”). After a sneeze, some families keep going with dinero (“money”) on the second sneeze and amor (“love”) on the third. The clip pairs salud with other set phrases like buen provecho and buen viaje.
