Kínder was originally just the brand name of Ferrero’s chocolate egg with a toy inside, launched in Italy in 1974 — but in Mexican Spanish it drifted into a generic word, the way “Kleenex” stands in for any tissue in English. The genericizing pattern is common with beloved children’s products across languages — a brand becomes so dominant that its name replaces the category itself.
