What does “me voy” mean in Spanish?

Me voy is how Spanish speakers say “I’m off” or “I’m leaving” when they get up to go. It comes from the reflexive verb irse, so it literally means “I take myself away.” Beginners often learn voy (“I go”) on its own, but adding me changes the feeling: voy points to where you go, while me voy means you are heading out right now.

In the clip a character stands up and says Bueno, me voy. Tengo cosas que hacer (“Right, I’m off. I have things to do”). You will hear ya me voy (“I’m leaving now”) and me voy a casa (“I’m going home”) all the time in real speech.
