What does “plumones” mean in Mexican Spanish?

Plumones are markers or felt-tip pens. In Mexico this is the normal school-supply word, and it comes from pluma (pen, originally “feather,” because old pens were quills). Many courses teach marcadores for markers, but in Mexico you will hear plumones for the colored felt-tip kind. Knowing the local word helps you shop and follow class instructions there.

Careful: plumón has another meaning too — soft down feathers or a down quilt — so context decides. In the clip the speaker shows “plumones azules, plumones azules” (blue markers), clearly the writing kind. In some places marcadores are the thick whiteboard ones and plumones the thinner colored set.
