What does “comer fuera” mean in Spanish?

Comer fuera is “to eat out” — no restaurant needs to be mentioned, because fuera (“outside”) already means “not at home.” The little word builds a whole family of phrases: cenar fuera (dinner out), dormir fuera (sleep away from home), trabajar fuera (work away). Its opposite is simply en casa: the eternal budget question is ¿comemos fuera o en casa?
