What does “lapicera” mean in Argentinian Spanish?

A lapicera is a pen — the ballpoint kind you write with. In Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay this is the normal word for it. In most other Spanish-speaking places people say bolígrafo or just boli, and in Mexico you often hear pluma. So if someone asks you for a lapicera, they want a pen, not a pencil.

Be careful: a lápiz is a pencil, so lapicera looks close but means a different tool. Argentinians also call a pen a birome, a word that comes from the names of its inventors, Bíró and Meyne.
