What does “Freibad” mean in German?

A Freibad is an outdoor public swimming pool, and many German towns have one that opens for summer. The name is a trap for English speakers: frei doesn’t mean “free of charge” here — you still pay admission — it means “open” or “in the open air,” the same frei as in Freiluft (open-air). Its indoor counterpart, open year-round, is the Hallenbad.

A typical Freibad bundles several pools in one site — a lap pool, a kids' Babybecken, diving towers, slides, and often a whole lawn (Liegewiese) for sunbathing between swims, which is exactly the layout this clip walks through.
