How do you say “I would like to” politely in German?

This clip says the same request four ways, from caveman to customer of the year: “Pulli zurück. Kaputt.” grows into “…deshalb würde ich ihn gerne zurückgeben.” The polite core is würde … gerne + verb — “I would like to.” It’s the single most useful politeness pattern in German: wrap any request in it and you instantly sound calm, reasonable, and impossible to refuse.

The pattern flexes everywhere: Ich würde gerne zahlen (I’d like to pay), ich würde gerne einen Termin vereinbaren (I’d like to make an appointment). The clip’s full version also adds a reason with deshalb — sweater bought recently, hole discovered, deshalb the return — which is exactly how native complaints work: facts first, then the polite ask.
