What is a “Gartenzwerg” in German garden culture?

Tucked among the rose bushes in this garden tour is a Gartenzwerg — literally “garden dwarf,” the bearded, pointy-hatted gnome figurine that’s been a fixture of German gardens since the 1800s. Mass-produced first in Thuringia, the little statues boomed again after WWII as an affordable, cheerful sign of a settled, tidy home — and they’ve never fully left German gardens since.

Folklore held that these dwarfs worked the garden secretly at night and turned to stone in daylight, which is supposedly why you only ever see them standing still. Today the Gartenzwerg is a running joke about German suburban tidiness (spießig, “square” or “uptight”) as much as it’s a genuine tradition — most Germans will roll their eyes at one and still not get rid of theirs.
