What does “Schwarzwald” mean in German?

The Schwarzwald, in southwestern Germany, is a straightforward compound: schwarz (“black”) + Wald (“forest”). The name isn’t poetic exaggeration — dense, closely planted evergreen fir and spruce trees block out so much daylight that the forest floor looks dark even at midday, an effect early travelers and Roman writers both remarked on. It’s a clean example of how German builds place names by simply stacking two plain words together.

Roman sources called the same region Silva Nigra (“black forest”) and also Silva Marciana, “border forest,” since it long marked the edge of Roman territory. Today the name survives in one of Germany’s best-known exports, the Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake), and in the region’s famous cuckoo clocks.
