What does “unwiderstehlich” mean in German?

Unwiderstehlich means “irresistible,” and it’s built like a little stack of parts. At its heart sits stehen (“to stand”); add wider (“against”) and you get widerstehen (“to resist”). Turn that into an adjective with -lich, then flip it negative with un-, and the layers spell the meaning out almost literally: un-wider-steh-lich, “un-against-stand-able.” German assembles big words this way, one transparent brick at a time.

Widerstehen takes the dative: Ich kann dir nicht widerstehen — “I can’t resist you.” The bare adjective widerstehlich (“resistible”) technically exists but is rare; in practice you’ll almost only meet the negative unwiderstehlich.
