What does “Zeiger” mean in German?
A clock’s hands are called Zeiger in German, and the name says exactly what they do. Zeiger is built from the verb zeigen (“to point, to show”) plus -er, the ending that turns an action into the thing that does it. So the hands aren’t “hands” at all — they’re literally “pointers,” the parts that point at the hour. Once you hear zeigen inside Zeiger, the word tells its own story.
The same zeigen root builds der Zeigefinger, the “pointing finger” — what English flatly calls the index finger. German keeps naming things by what they do: a Zeiger points at the time, a Zeigefinger points at the world. Watch for this -er pattern everywhere — fahren (“to drive”) gives Fahrer (“driver”), lehren (“to teach”) gives Lehrer (“teacher”). Spot the verb and you can often guess the noun.
