What does the German prefix “zer-” mean?

One confessed kiss, and the soap-opera fallout is total: “Du hast unsere Liebe zerstört … alles zerstört.” Zerstören means to destroy, and its first syllable does the damage: the prefix zer- always means “apart, to pieces.” Brechen is to break, zerbrechen to shatter; reißen to tear, zerreißen to rip to shreds. Hear zer- and something is beyond repair.

The pattern is wonderfully productive: zerschneiden (cut to pieces), zerkratzen (scratch up), zerfallen (fall apart), zerdrücken (crush). Melodrama German leans on it hard — a telenovela character never merely damages a relationship when she can zerstören it three times in one scene, with the betrayed mother listing everything that’s been zerstört.
