What does “wacker” mean in a German fairy tale?

Wacker describes someone brave, hardworking, and thoroughly decent — think “plucky” or “stalwart” rather than modern mutig (brave). It comes from Middle High German words for “watchful” and “vigorous,” and Duden now marks it as veraltend (going out of use) — which is exactly why it still shows up in fairy tales: it carries an old-fashioned, storybook ring a modern word wouldn’t.

In this Brothers Grimm retelling, a poor girl is described as ganz wacker — thoroughly plucky and hardworking — while she gathers firewood for her mother, right before the story’s magical turn. You’ll mostly meet wacker in exactly this kind of narration today: fairy tales, folk songs, and the occasional formal compliment, rarely in everyday conversation.
