What does “schattig” mean in Dutch?

Schattig means cute or adorable, from schat (treasure, darling). Used for a baby’s big eyes or a puppy’s belly, it is pure warmth. But aimed at a grown man, it flips: it implies he is small, harmless, and non-threatening — in other words, not to be taken seriously. Dutch has no separate word for the two registers; context and tone do all the work, which is exactly what makes it a trap for learners.

In the clip, a woman coos over a baby — “Kijk nou hoe schattig die oogjes” (look how cute those little eyes) — while a man sitting nearby fumes: “Ik ben er helemaal klaar mee dat mensen me schattig noemen” (I’m completely done with people calling me cute). His defence of his beard makes the subtext clear: schattig strips an adult of gravitas. English speakers reaching for “cute” as a compliment should note that Dutch shares this exact ambiguity — “you’re so cute” can land very differently depending on who is speaking to whom.
