What is a “boekverslag” in Dutch high school?

A boekverslag is the book-report Dutch high-schoolers write for Nederlands class. The teacher hands out a boekenlijst, the canon of Dutch and translated works the Eindexamen requires, and students have to read a fixed minimum (8–12 books for vwo) and submit a written response per book. The list rotates: Multatuli, Hella Haasse, Cees Nooteboom, Tommy Wieringa, Arnon Grunberg. Generations of students have hated, plagiarized, or quietly grown up on the same titles.
