Borduren is the Dutch verb for embroidering, taught in many primary-school handvaardigheid lessons and rooted in a centuries-old domestic tradition. Dutch girls historically learned borduren through making a merklap (sampler cloth): an alphabet-and-motif practice piece that recorded a girl’s stitching skill and was kept as a family keepsake. The merklap-tradition is preserved in Dutch museum collections (Openluchtmuseum Arnhem, Zuiderzeemuseum). Modern Dutch borduren has revived through fiber-art communities, Etsy-sellers, and craft-focused TikTok creators. Dutch primary schools and handwerken-clubs at vmbo-level still teach the basics.
