What is a Dutch “uitlaatveldje”?

An uitlaatveldje is the patch of grass where you walk the dog. Literally: “let-out field.” Every Dutch neighborhood has one. The verb uitlaten means to take an animal out for its bathroom and energy break. So far, so unremarkable. The joke in this clip is that the same word works for kids: het kind moet even naar het uitlaatveldje. The exhausted parent has identified that the toddler also has a uitlaten requirement.

In this NPO Zapp sketch, parents drop their kid at the field with the same instruction they’d give the dog: go run yourself empty. Then they sit on the bench. The kid runs. Everyone wins.
