What is an “NS-conducteur” in the Netherlands?

NS stands for Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch national rail operator and one of the country’s most-used institutions. Roughly 1.3 million Dutch passengers ride NS trains every day, and the on-board conducteur is the public face of the system: the staff member who checks tickets, calls station stops, helps with disruptions, and increasingly absorbs the brunt of passenger frustration. NS-conducteur is one of the most widely-recognised Dutch job titles, and the role is unionised, well-paid, and pretty hard to get into.

In this clip, NOS Jeugdjournaal explains a 2024 NS rollout: about 3500 conducteurs will start wearing bodycams to deter aggression. “Aggressie tegen conducteurs stijgt al jaren,” the report notes.
