When is the “noorderlicht” visible in the Netherlands?

The noorderlicht (“northern lights” / aurora borealis) is normally a Scandinavian and Arctic phenomenon, but during high solar-activity years parts of the northern Netherlands occasionally catch a colored sky show. Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen, and the Wadden coast (especially around Lauwersoog) are the most likely places to see it. Dutch sightings tend to cluster around the zonnemaximum phase of the 11-year solar cycle, with 2024-2025 producing some of the strongest noorderlicht-displays over the Netherlands in decades. KNMI (Dutch weather service) issues “aurora-alarm” notifications during major solar storms.
