What is the “Junior Songfestival” in the Netherlands and Belgium?

The Junior Songfestival is the Dutch (AVROTROS) and Flemish-Belgian (Ketnet) junior version of the Eurovision Song Contest, for contestants aged 9 to 14. The format runs annual national selections with elimination rounds, then sends one act to compete at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest against ~17 other European countries. The Netherlands has won twice (Ralf Mackenbach 2009, Stefania 2020), and the Belgian Eurosong voor kids has produced national stars like Laura Omloop, Leona Philippo, and Marlies van Hoof. Dutch Junior Songfestival-finals draw 700,000+ TV viewers and run as the country’s most-watched youth-music event.
