What is a Flemish “confituurtaart”?

Confituurtaart is the Flemish word for a jam tart, a flat, flaky pastry layered with thick fruit confituur (jam) and sometimes a kruimellaag (crumble topping) or a lattice of dough strips. Confituur itself is the Belgian word for jam where Netherlands Dutch usually says jam. Flemish kitchens are full of confituur jars from local fruit (cherry, plum, apricot), and the tart shows up in nearly every village bakery.

In this clip, a Flemish baker presents her confituurtaart and connects it directly to the kermis: “Het doet mij echt denken aan de kermis.” The dessert has been a kermis-and-bakery staple for generations, the way appeltaart is in the Netherlands.
