What does “mi switi Sranan” mean?
Mi switi Sranan is Sranan Tongo for “my sweet Suriname,” a phrase Dutch-Surinamese diaspora communities use as both endearment and homeland reference. Sranan Tongo is one of Suriname’s lingua franca languages alongside Dutch (the country’s official language). The Netherlands has roughly 350,000 residents of Surinamese background, mostly concentrated in Amsterdam Zuidoost (Bijlmer), Rotterdam Zuid, and The Hague. Sranan expressions cross constantly into Dutch youth slang: fawaka (what’s up), poku (music), fa di go (how’s it going). Surinamese-Dutch artists like Massive, Typhoon, and Frenna mix Dutch and Sranan in lyrics.
In this clip, a Klokhuis-segment plays a love song to Suriname: “Ik ben een deel van jou, je ziet jou in mijn ogen. Omheld me met jouw grond, ik hoef niet eens naar boven.”
