What is Dutch primary-school “topo”?

Topo (short for topografie) is the Dutch primary-school geography drill: kids memorise the capitals of all twelve Dutch provinces, names of countries on a map, major rivers, and city locations. Topo-toetsen happen weekly in groep 5 through groep 8, with map-blank-fill-in formats that every Dutch adult remembers. The provincial capital list traps generations because it isn’t always intuitive: Noord-Holland's capital is Haarlem (not Amsterdam), Zuid-Holland's is Den Haag (not Rotterdam), Flevoland's is Lelystad, and Friesland's is Leeuwarden. Dutch adults still play topo-trivia at family dinners and Boekenweek-style quiz events.
