Why do Dutch festival-goers wear “oordoppen”?

Oordoppen are ear plugs, and in the Netherlands they’ve become a near-universal festival-and-concert accessory. Dutch hearing-protection culture is unusual in Europe: since 2018, a voluntary industry code (Convenant Preventie Gehoorschade) committed Dutch venues to keep sound levels below 103 dB and provide ear-plug dispensers at the door. Dutch hearing-charity Hoormij-Stichting and the KNO-vereniging have run public campaigns like “Ik hou van mijn oren” aimed at teens. Custom op-maat-gemaakte oordoppen (typically Pluggerz or ACS Custom) are commonly worn by DJ-scene regulars and Pinkpop-veterans across the country.
