What does “benieuwd” mean in Dutch?

Benieuwd is one of the most common Dutch words with no clean English twin. It means curious or eager to find out, but only about a specific outcome — you cannot call someone een benieuwd persoon the way you can a “curious person.” The go-to construction is ik ben benieuwd of/wat/hoe… — “I wonder whether/what/how…” — which lands somewhere between “I’m curious” and “I can’t wait to see.”

The word contrasts neatly with nieuwsgierig, which also translates as “curious” but carries a stronger, sometimes nosy edge and can describe a permanent trait. Benieuwd is always about anticipation — waiting on a specific answer or outcome. In the clip, a teacher opens a hip-hop class with ik ben benieuwd of jullie mij kunnen vertellen wanneer het hiphop is ontstaan — “I’m curious whether you can tell me when hip-hop started.” It’s a textbook example of the casual, warm register the word lives in: polite, engaged, and forward-looking.
