What are Dutch “ledendagen”?

Ledendagen (“members' days”) are a peculiarly Dutch institution rooted in the country’s omroep system. The Netherlands runs public broadcasting through membership-based associations (omroepen like Omroep MAX, AVROTROS, BNNVARA, EO, KRO-NCRV, VPRO), where citizens pay annual dues to fund and steer the broadcaster. Most omroepen reward their leden with annual ledendagen: a tour of theaters across the country with live performances, host meet-and-greets, prijzenfestivals, and member-only screenings. Omroep MAX (the over-fifties broadcaster) runs some of the largest, drawing tens of thousands of leden.
