What does “életkor” mean in Hungarian?
This couples' guessing game is built around életkor, “age.” It’s élet (life) plus kor (age, era), and the players try to találd el az életkort, “guess the age,” from clues. The fun part for a learner is the ladder of Hungarian life-stage words they run through to narrow it down.
The clues march up the stages of life: bölcsőde (daycare, for under-threes), óvoda (kindergarten, ages three to six), általános iskola (primary school), all the way to nyugdíj (pension, retirement). Learn életkor and that little sequence and you can talk about ages and stages across a whole Hungarian lifetime.
