Why does French say “tu me manques” for “I miss you”?

tu me manques
French sentence built backwards
“I miss you” — in French the absent person is the subject

Tu me manques means “I miss you,” but the sentence runs the other way round: literally “you are lacking to me.” The person who is absent is the subject, and the one doing the missing is that little me in the middle. Which makes je te manque not “I miss you” at all — it is “you miss me.” Swapping the two is the classic learner slip.

The verb keeps that “is lacking” logic elsewhere: il me manque deux euros is “I’m two euros short,” and manquer de patience is to lack patience. When you miss something you were aiming at, the word order goes back to normal — j’ai manqué mon train, j’ai manqué une marche (“I missed a step”).
