How do you say “pay attention” in French?

English speakers reach for payer attention to say “pay attention” — but that’s a word-for-word calque that simply doesn’t exist in French. Payer is for paying money. To say you’re paying attention, French uses être attentif: Tu dois être attentif (“you have to pay attention”). The fix is one swap: drop the cash verb, and “be attentive” instead.

Être attentif agrees with who you’re describing: je suis attentif (m.) / attentive (f.), ils sont attentifs. Two everyday alternatives carry the same meaning: faire attention (“be careful / pay attention,” also a warning — fais attention!) and the slightly more formal prêter attention à (“pay attention to”). What you’ll never hear from a native speaker is payer attention — the only thing you pay (payer) in French is a bill.
