What does “qamat al-qiyama” (قامت القيامة) mean in Arabic?
When cat-bathing goes wrong in this clip, the narrator reaches for the strongest chaos idiom Arabic has: وكأن القيامة قد قامت — “as if the Resurrection had risen,” meaning all hell broke loose. القيامة is the Day of Judgment, and the verb قامت (“rose, broke out”) shares its root, so the phrase literally doubles down on itself: the Rising rose. It’s the everyday hyperbole for any scene of screaming, scratching, total mayhem.
You’ll hear it as a warning too: بتقوم القيامة — “there’ll be hell to pay” — if, say, you’re late for dinner at your mother’s. The clip earns it with claws: the cats تخدش بمخالبها, scratch with their claws, and scream through every bath until one mysteriously calm cat arrives. Same root, calmer relatives: قام (to get up) and قيام الليل (nighttime prayer).
