Why do Chinese kids call strangers “阿姨”?

阿姨 (āyí)
Chinese stranger-address custom
“auntie” — the polite way to address a woman your parents' age

In this clip a little girl asks strangers to open her snacks, and she never says “excuse me, madam” — she picks a family word for each person: 奶奶 (grandma) for an older woman, 阿姨 (auntie) for a middle-aged one, 姐姐 (big sister) and 小哥哥 (young “big brother”) for the young ones. Chinese politely maps strangers onto the family tree, and choosing the right branch — by age — is the real skill.

Guessing too old is the danger: calling a young woman 阿姨 when she was hoping for 姐姐 can genuinely sting, which is why street vendors flatter customers with 姐姐 and 帅哥. The girl’s request is a perfect template too: 能帮我打开吗? — “can you help me open this?” — 能帮我 + verb works for almost any favor.
