What does “好了好了” mean in Chinese?
On its own, 好 means “good.” Add 了 and you get 好了 — “it’s done,” “it’s fine now.” But say it twice — 好了好了 — and it stops being approval: it’s the sound of someone who has had enough. In this clip a kid keeps mugging for the camera, tongue out, and the adult’s 好了…好了 means “all right, all right — we’ve seen this two hundred times.”
Doubled 好了好了 is how Chinese speakers calm someone down, cut off a story, or end a squabble — the tone does the work, from soothing (“there, there”) to snappish (“enough!”). The clip’s title runs on a matching pattern worth stealing: 别再…了 (“stop …-ing already”), as in 别再伸舌头了 — “stop sticking your tongue out.”
