What does “Evviva” mean in Italian?

When the punchline lands — she’s just been fired and doesn’t care because her diary launched — she shouts Evviva!, “Hooray!” Evviva is a fused-together version of e viva, “and long live,” the same root behind cheers like viva l’Italia! Over time the two words merged into one all-purpose exclamation of pure delight.

Evviva and viva both surface in Italian as far back as the 1300s, both starting life as a cheer wishing someone or something a “long life” — a king, a team, a country. Evviva simply generalized further: today it just means “hooray,” with no life or longevity implied at all.
