What is a “composting toilet”?

A composting toilet is a waterless toilet that breaks down human waste into compost using sawdust, peat moss, or coconut fiber. Americans use them in tiny houses, off-grid cabins, RVs, and remote campsites where running water and a sewer line aren’t available. The fixture became a tiny-house signature after HGTV launched Tiny House Hunters in 2014, and now any American home tour smaller than 400 square feet usually includes one.
