What does “you’re cooking” mean in modern English slang?
“You’re cooking” is a Gen Z English slang phrase that means “you’re doing great” or “you’re on a roll.” The phrase started in Black American English and the gaming-streamer world (a streamer who is winning is “cooking”), then moved into mainstream English by the early 2020s. Today people say “let him cook” to mean “let him do his thing, he’s making something good.”
In this clip, a YouTuber tests speakers at every price level. When the $100 speaker plays well, he says, “You’re cooking. That’s not going anywhere.” The phrase fits the moment perfectly: the speaker is doing great. It’s the kind of compliment Gen Z viewers will recognize instantly.
