What does “hop on hop off” mean in English?
A “hop-on hop-off” bus is a tourist bus in a city. You buy one ticket. You can get on at any stop, get off to look around, then catch the next bus when you are ready. In this travel clip, visitors take a “hop-on hop-off bus” to see Budapest from the top. The word “hop” means to jump or move quickly, so the name describes getting on and off the bus in an easy, casual way.
Before a word like “bus” or “tour,” the standard spelling is “hop-on hop-off” with hyphens — but signs and adverts often write it without hyphens, as “hop on hop off.” You will see it in many cities around the world, usually for tourists. The verb “hop” is also used in everyday English for quick movements: “hop in the car” means get in the car quickly, and “hop over” means go to a place quickly and come back. For example: “Hop over to the shop and get some milk.” In all these uses, “hop” gives the feeling of something quick and easy, not difficult or slow.
