What is “steelhead trout” and how is it different from salmon?

Steelhead trout is a rainbow trout that swims out to the ocean and back, like salmon. The flesh is pink-orange, and the taste is close enough to salmon that American supermarkets often shelve it next to salmon as a cheaper alternative. Technically it’s a trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), not a salmon, but the two species are close cousins, and farmed steelhead has become a popular American grocery fish since the 2010s.
