What does “car park” mean in British English?

In British English, a car park is a place where you leave your car. People in the United States call it a “parking lot.” The word is the same idea, but the words are different. A British speaker says, “There is a car park at my office.” An American speaker says, “There is a parking lot at my office.” Both mean the same thing.

A big building with many floors for cars is a “multi-storey car park” in Britain and a “parking garage” in America. So if you visit the United Kingdom and see a sign that says car park, you know where to leave your car.
