What does “come on” mean in English?
“Come on” is a very common phrase in English with several uses. The most useful one for learners is to encourage someone or push them to act. In this clip, someone keeps saying “Come on, just say something” to a friend who is hesitating. The phrase can also show that you are a little impatient or frustrated. Tone is important here — a gentle “come on” sounds friendly and encouraging, while a sharp “come on” can sound annoyed.
Here are the main ways you will hear “come on” used. First, encouragement: “Come on, you can do it!” Second, asking someone to hurry: “Come on, we’re going to be late!” Third, showing you do not believe something: “Oh, come on — that can’t be true!” You can also shorten it to “c’mon” in informal writing, which is very common in text messages and online chat. The phrase is very informal and does not usually belong in formal emails or professional writing. A slightly more formal alternative is “please” or “I encourage you to.”
