What does “galpón” mean in Latin American Spanish?

A galpón is a big single-storey shed used for storage, livestock or machinery — here the barn that houses the chickens (“el galpón de los pollos”). It’s a strongly Latin American word, dominant across the Southern Cone and parts of Central America. In Spain the same warehouse-style structure is usually a nave (or nave industrial), so galpón instantly flags American Spanish.

Many trace galpón to Náhuatl calpulli (“big house”), a neat reminder of how Indigenous Mexican vocabulary spread through the colonial Spanish-speaking world. Regional synonyms include bodega, depósito, granero and barracón. The clip also models a tidy farm-hygiene verb — desinfectarse los pies (to disinfect one’s feet) before entering, so as not to bring infection to the chicks.
