What are German “Maultaschen,” and why are they called “Herrgottsbescheißerle”?

Beyond the everyday name, Swabians also call them Herrgottsbescheißerle, “little God-cheaters.” Legend has it Cistercian monks hid meat inside pasta dough during Lent so God wouldn’t notice they were breaking the meat-free fast — a culinary loophole baked directly into the food’s folk nickname.

Historians are clear this is legend, not documented history — no record actually confirms the monk supposedly behind it. But the story stuck hard enough that Swabian menus and locals still reach for the nickname alongside “Maultaschen,” and the region leans into the joke every Lent. The “-le” ending is Swabian dialect’s diminutive, softening even a mock-blasphemous nickname into something affectionate.
