What does “LKW” stand for in German?

A short clip about a couple who live and work out of their truck labels it simply an LKW — the everyday word for truck; almost nobody says the full term out loud. LKW stands for Lastkraftwagen: Last (load/cargo) + Kraft (power) + Wagen (vehicle) — a literal engineering description compressed into three letters, where English just has “truck.”

German leans on this kind of initialism constantly for vehicles and infrastructure: PKW (Personenkraftwagen, “person-power-vehicle” = car), U-Bahn (Untergrundbahn, subway), S-Bahn (Schnellbahn, commuter rail). Once you know the pattern, spotting PKW/LKW on a road sign tells you instantly which lane restrictions apply to cars versus trucks.
