What does “Grüffelo” mean, and where does the name come from?

Der Grüffelo is a made-up monster — big teeth, terrible claws, a poisonous wart — invented for a rhyming British picture book and imported into German nearly unchanged. In the story, a clever mouse invents the Grüffelo to scare off a fox, an owl, and a snake, only to run into the real thing. The name stayed almost identical in translation because, being invented, it had no existing meaning to translate.

The original English book, The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, was translated into German by Monika Osberghaus and published in 1999 as Der Grüffelo — it’s since become just as iconic in German nurseries as in English ones. This read-aloud keeps the book’s tight internal rhyme (Tier / dir, Klauen / kauen), part of why the story works so well for listening practice even before every word is understood.
