What does “지켜줄게” mean in Korean?
In Korean, “I’ll protect you” isn’t one word but three grammar layers fused together. 지켜줄게 stacks 지키다 (protect), the benefactive 주다 (do it for you), and -ㄹ게, a casual promise ending you can only use about yourself. So the tenderness — that you’re guarding someone for their sake, and vowing it — is baked into the verb itself, not added as separate vocabulary.
The line lands at the emotional peak of this goodbye: 내가 널 반드시 지켜줄게 — “I will protect you, no matter what” (반드시 = without fail). Swap the stem and the pattern travels: 기다려줄게 “I’ll wait for you,” 도와줄게 “I’ll help you,” 잡아줄게 “I’ll catch you.” Two things make -ㄹ게 special: it’s strictly first-person, and it needs a listener present — it’s a spoken promise to someone, never a neutral statement about the future. Drop the 줄게 and 지켜 alone is just a bare “protect”; the 줘/줄게 is what turns it into a vow made for you.
