철원 이름 가지고 장난치며 수다 떠는 친구들

What does the Korean name “철수” mean?
철수 (Cheolsu) is Korea’s John Doe. Paired with 영희 (Yeonghui) for girls — and even 바둑이 (Badugi) for the dog — it’s the default name that fills elementary textbooks and grammar examples, so every Korean grew up reading about the same two kids. Calling a real person 철수 sounds faintly like naming a stock cartoon character: generic, wholesome, a little old-fashioned. It’s the name you reach for when you mean Anybody.
The pairing is fixed — think Dick-and-Jane or Jack-and-Jill. 철수와 영희 anchored decades of Korean school readers, which is why the name reads squeaky-clean and slightly retro rather than trendy. Bonus twist for Sino-Korean fans: the identical-sounding 철수 (撤收) means to withdraw or pull out — 철수하다 is what troops do when they retreat — so context alone tells you whether it’s a boy or a maneuver. In the clip the friends bat the place-name 철원 around, splintering it into 철, 원, 철수 and 원철 and teasing each other with the textbook everyman name.
