What does “ad’as min batnak” mean in Levantine Arabic?
ادعس من بطنك (adʿas min batnak), literally “I’ll step on your stomach,” is a theatrical Levantine motherly threat that nobody actually carries out. It’s said when a kid is about to ruin something the mother just spent hours making, like the milk currently boiling on the stove in this clip. The image is exaggerated on purpose; the point is the volume.
Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian, and Jordanian moms all reach for variants of this. The threat-as-affection style is part of the everyday warmth of Levantine family life. The pot of laban (yogurt or boiling milk) gets defended with a verbal blast no English mom-equivalent quite matches.
