What does “مرور الكرام” mean in Arabic?
مرور الكرام (murūr al-kirām) means to pass by without notice — and it is almost always used in the negative: لم يمر مرور الكرام, “it did not pass unnoticed.” The literal image is noble guests who move through gracefully without imposing, rooted in Quranic usage (Al-Furqan 25:72). In modern Arabic it saturates sports writing, political commentary, and news headlines whenever a slight, a result, or an event demands a response.
In this World Cup revenge countdown the phrase appears twice. Maradona’s dismissal of Thomas Müller at a pre-match press conference “لم يمر ابدا مرور الكرام” — it did not pass unnoticed at all — and Germany repaid him with a historic 4–0 demolition. Later, Spain’s 2010 title win over Holland is given the same treatment before Holland’s crushing 5–1 rematch. The cognate-accusative construction (marra murūra l-kirāmi) is classical Arabic grammar pressed into vivid everyday use: the verb مَرَّ (“to pass”) echoes in its own verbal noun, intensified by the genitive الكرام. Master this phrase and you will recognize it instantly in any Arabic broadcast.
